Bake & Take Day March 24th

Bake and Take Day, celebrated on the 4th Saturday of March, is sponsored by the North Dakota Wheat Commission. This year it is celebrated on March 24th and the NDWC encourages people to surprise others with a freshly baked food.

Participants are invited to bake the Cheese Sticks and 100% Whole Wheat Sugar Cookie recipes developed for this year or to bake one of their favorites.

For nearly 40 years grower organizations in wheat producing states have been promoting baking-with-wheat projects. Last year nearly 4,000 Bake and Take recipes were distributed to 4-H clubs, church groups, school groups and individuals throughout North Dakota that wanted to participate.

To obtain free recipe brochures and matching stickers for packages of baked goods, send your request with name, complete mailing address and the quantity of brochures needed to Bake and Take, North Dakota Wheat Commission, 2401 46th Ave SE, Suite 104, Mandan ND 58554-4928.

Additional recipes for baked foods and nutritional information are available on the commission’s web site.

Blizzard on tap for the Northern Plains this week

More snow is expected this week in the dry areas of the U.S. Northern Plains. A strong winter storm is expected to begin impacting the region by late tonight and continue through Wednesday. Significant snowfall amounts are expected across the Eastern Dakotas and Central Minnesota, where snowfall accumulations in excess of one foot will be possible by late Wednesday. The snow is expected to buoy prospects for spring wheat seedings.

Winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour may also create blizzard conditions in parts of the Dakotas and Western Minnesota. Freezing rain will be another potential hazard tonight and Tuesday mostly along and South of Interstate 90, from Southeastern South Dakota through Southern Minnesota.

Blizzard and winter storm watches and warnings are in effect for a large portion of the Dakotas and Minnesota. These include a:

  • Blizzard watch in east central, southeast and far south central areas of North Dakota Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday.
  • Winter storm watch in southwest and portions of south central North Dakota on Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday.
  • Winter storm warning in east central South Dakota Tuesday into Wednesday.
  • Blizzard watch in north central and northeast South Dakota Tuesday through Wednesday.
  • Winter storm watch in west and southern South Dakota late tonight into Wednesday.
  • Winter weather advisory for southeast South Dakota Tuesday through Wednesday.

USB’s CEO Becherer named 2012 Agribusiness Leader of the Year by NAMA

John Becherer, CEO of the United Soybean Board (USB) and national soy checkoff, has been named the 2012 Agribusiness Leader of the Year by the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA). This award, NAMA’s highest honor, will be presented at the opening general session of the 2012 Agri-Marketing Conference, “Acres of Innovation,” on April 19 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The award honors outstanding leaders in agribusiness, education, government service or other agribusiness-related areas who exemplify excellence in agribusiness by their significant contributions to the industry.

“This is NAMA’s highest award, and it honors executives throughout agriculture for their leadership and innovation,” said Vanessa Kummer, a soybean farmer from Colfax, N.D., and USB chair. “On behalf of all U.S. soybean farmers, I want to thank John for his unwavering commitment to creating profit opportunities for every U.S. soybean farmer. We should all feel proud of our great USB achievements with John serving as our CEO.”

For nearly 18 years, John Becherer has guided a board of more than 60 volunteer U.S. soybean farmer-directors through times of growth and change. The soy checkoff organization marked its 20th anniversary in 2011. Global demand for soybeans has increased more than 150 percent since the soy checkoff began in 1991. Becherer helped build this growth at a pace that has outperformed global demand for any other major U.S. row crop.

Last year alone, Becherer helped USB farmer-leaders create a new long-range strategic plan; develop a new effort that could redefine how the marketplace determines the value of U.S. soy and reward U.S. soybean farmers for quality; and direct the first formal, independent, third-party assessment of USB’s governance and structure in the organization’s 20 years of existence.

Becherer also engaged private industry to more effectively build confidence among consumers about today’s agriculture and our food supply by helping to create the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance. The organization has grown to include more than 70 major U.S. farm and commodity organizations from just 20 when it began in 2010.
