South Dakota June stocks and acreage numbers mostly lower

Stocks down from last year

South Dakota’s June 1, 2012 corn, soybeans, oats, barley and all wheat stocks are down from last year, according to the South Dakota field office of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Sorghum stocks are up from last year.

Corn stocks totaled 166.3 million bushels, down 3 percent from last year. On-farm stocks accounted for 100.0 million bushels, down 13 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 66.3 million bushels, are up 18 percent from June 2011.

Soybean stocks in South Dakota totaled 24.5 million bushels on June 1, down 17 percent from last year. On-farm stocks represented 10.0 million bushels, down 29 percent from last year.Off-farm stocks, at 14.5 million bushels, are down 6 percent from last year.

All wheat stocks totaled 23.6 million bushels, down 3 percent from last year. On-farm stocks totaled 9.5 million bushels, down 14 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 14.1 million bushels, are up 6 percent from June 2011.

Oat stocks, at 1.6 million bushels, are down 24 percent from last year. On-farm stocks totaled 1.1 million bushels, down 31 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks totaled 502,000 bushels, down 3 percent from June 2011. Barley stocks on farms totaled 120,000 bushels, down 56 percent from the previous year. No off-farm estimate is published. Sorghum off-farm stocks totaled 1,642,000 bushels, significantly above the 343,000 bushels a year ago. No on-farm estimate is published.

Planted acreage up for corn & soybeans, down for wheat

South Dakota’s corn planted area for all purposes in 2012 is estimated at 6.00 million acres, up 15 percent (800,000 acres) from last year, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.  Estimated planted acres exceed the previous record from 1931 when 5.50 million acres were planted. Growers expect to harvest 5.55 million acres for grain based on June 1 crop condition, up 12 percent (600,000 acres) from the previous high of 4,950,000 acres established last year.

Soybean planted acres in South Dakota for 2012 are estimated at 4.50 million, up 10 percent (400,000 acres) from last year. Biotechnology varieties were planted on 98 percent of the soybean acres in South Dakota, unchanged from last year.

Winter wheat estimated acreage seeded last fall totaled 1.35 million acres, down 18 percent (300,000 acres) from last year’s 1.65 million acres. Grain area harvested based on June 1 crop condition is expected to be 1.30 million acres, down 18 percent (290,000
acres) from last year. Other spring wheat plantings are estimated at 1.1 million acres, down 12 percent (150,000 acres) from last year. Acres estimated to be harvested for grain are 1.07 million, down 12 percent (150,000 acres) from 2011. Durum wheat plantings are estimated at 8,000 acres, unchanged from last year. All 8,000 acres are estimated to be harvested for grain in 2012 based on June 1 crop condition.

All sunflower acres are estimated at 590,000 planted, up 22 percent from 2011 acreage levels. Oil sunflower acres account for 530,000 acres, up 115,000 acres from last year. Non-oil sunflower plantings are estimated at 60,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from 2011.

Oats planted are estimated at 130,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from 2011. Producers intend to harvest 70,000 acres for grain, unchanged from last year’s harvest based on June 1 crop condition. Sorghum plantings, estimated at 200,000 acres, are up 50,000 acres from last year. Proso millet estimated plantings totaled 50,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from last year.  Barley estimated plantings totaled 35,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from last year. Flaxseed plantings, estimated at 10,000 acres, are up 2,000 acres from 2011.

All hay harvested acres are estimated at 3.65 million, up 100,000 acres from last year. Alfalfa hay estimated harvested acres are at 2.30 million acres, down 50,000 acres from last year. Other hay is estimated to be harvested from 1.35 million acres, up 150,000 acres from last year.
