Biodiesel industry working to protect from renewable fuel credit fraud

The biodiesel industry plans to develop its own auditing and verification program following massive fraud in the government’s program of renewable identification numbers (RINs). The Environmental Protection Agency reported millions of fraudulent renewable fuel credits on the market last year, but has yet to revise the regulations to provide more protection for petroleum refiners and other businesses that unwittingly purchase fake credits.

At a recent House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee hearing, industry witnesses said they are working on a two-step verification program that includes independent auditors to ensure that biodiesel facilities actually produce renewable fuels. Producers of the fuel also plan to install on-site monitoring equipment that provides real-time data to petroleum refiners and other industries that are required to purchase RINs.
