Princess Kay Finalists to be named May 22

Finalists for one of Minnesota’s most coveted titles will be announced Sunday, May 22, in St. Joseph, Minn., at the conclusion of an event where county dairy princesses will gather.  Midwest Dairy Association, which sponsors the event, will name 12 young women to vie for Princess Kay of the Milky Way, the state’s official goodwill ambassador for the dairy industry.  Princess Kay is crowned the night before the Minnesota State Fair opens.  The contest is in its 58th year.

The finalists will be named during a luncheon beginning at noon at the Gorecki Center at the College of St. Benedict.  The public is invited to view the event free of charge, but tickets for the meal may also be ordered.

The announcement concludes a three-day event during which young women who are from dairy farm families or are involved in the dairy industry through their employment receive training to help them fulfill their dairy princess role at the local level.  Sessions on social media, classroom appearances and interpersonal skills are provided.  Those who choose to enter the Princess Kay contest are judged on a short speech, along with a personal interview and a mock media interview.

Dairy producers sponsor the event and the dairy princess program through their promotion checkoff organization, Midwest Dairy Association.
