Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 79.9 million pounds during April 2011. This was down 1 percent from one year ago and down 17 percent from March 2011.
For April, pork production was up but sheep and lamb production was down from one year ago, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 361,800 head during April, compared to 361,300 head the year before. Average live weight was 266 pounds, up 1 pound from April 2010.
Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 200 head during April, unchanged from a year earlier. Average live weight was 125 pounds, up 1 pound from April 2010.
