For the third summer in a row, Midwest Dairy is co-sponsoring the Family Farm Festival at the Minnesota Zoo, giving people a chance to meet this year’s 12 Princess Kay finalists and learn more about dairy.
The event takes place August 6 and 7 during regular Zoo hours, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be held at the Wells Fargo Family Farm section of the Zoo, which replicates a real working farm with animals such as chickens, pigs, horses and, of course, cows. Princess Kay finalists will greet visitors in the dairy barn each day, ready to share their knowledge of living and working on dairy farms. They’ll offer activities such as a coloring table, temporary tattoo station and cow feed sample exhibit. Give-aways will include bracelets, coloring books and hand-held fans as well as informational handouts.
The dairy princesses will also assist with milking demonstrations outside the dairy barn and reading stories in the granary.
The current Princess Kay, Katie Miron of Forest Lake, attended the event last year as a finalist and will participate again this year as she nears the end of her reign. The new Princess Kay will be crowned August 24.
“The Family Farm Festival gives us the chance to share our experiences with kids who may have never visited a real farm. Nothing beats seeing a child’s face light up when they see something new and they are bound to learn something new about dairy at the event.” says Miron.
Family Farm Festival is hosted by the Minnesota Zoo and sponsored by Wells Fargo, John Deere and Midwest Dairy Association. For more information on the Family Farm Festival visit http://www.mnzoo.org/events/Events_farm_Festival.asp.
