Red Meat down in SD


 Commerical red meat production for South Dakota totaled 71.0 million pounds during July 2011. This was down 3 percent from one year ago and down 7 percent from June 2011. For July, both pork and sheep and lamb production were down from one year ago, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 328,100 head during July, compared to 329,600 head the year before. Average live weight was 258 pounds, down 4 pounds from July 2010.

Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 200 head during July, down 100 head from a year earlier. Average live weight was 119 pounds, down 19 pounds from July 2010.
