SD hog numbers up from last year

The state’s September 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs was 1.32 million head, up 6 percent from one year ago and up 2 percent from June 1, 2011, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Breeding stock totaled 170,000 head, up 6 percent from September 2010 but down 3 percent from June 2011. Market hogs totaled 1,150,000 head, up 6 percent from last year and up 3 percent from this June.

The June through August pig crop was 908,000 head, up slightly from 906,000 head last year. During the quarter 89,000 sows farrowed, up 1 percent from 2010 but down 2 percent from last quarter. Pigs per litter averaged 10.20, down from the previous year’s 10.30. Producers intend to farrow 86,000 sows during September through November, 2 percent below the actual farrowings a year ago. Intentions for December 2011 through February 2012 are for 84,000 farrowings, down from 88,000 actual farrowings one year earlier.
