The July – September 2011 quarterly milk production for South Dakota totaled 458 million pounds, down 3 percent from last year and down 5 percent from last quarter’s 480 million pounds, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The average number of milk cows during the third quarter, at 90,000, is down 1,000 head from last year and down 2,000 head from last quarter.South Dakota’s April – July 2011 milk production was revised from 482 million pounds down to 480 million pounds. The average number of milk cows during thequarter was lowered from 93,000 head to 92,000 head.
Milk production for the July – September 2011 quarter totaled 85.0 million pounds, down 9 percent from 98 million pounds during the same period a year earlier, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Average number of milk cows during the current quarter, at 19,000 head, was equal to the previous quarter of April – June 2011 and down 2,000 head from the July – September 2010 quarter. Milk produced per cow during the July – September quarter was 4,475 pounds, down from 4,615 pounds the previous quarter and from 4,670 pounds during the same period last year.
Milk production in the United States during the July – September quarter totaled 48.7 billion pounds, up 1.4 percent from the July – September quarter last year. The average number of milk cows in the United States during the quarter was 9.21 million head, 83,000 head more than the same period last year
