Total red meat production in South Dakota up from last year


Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 89.3 million pounds during September 2011. This was up 5 percent from one year ago and up 7 percent from August 2011. For September, pork production was up from one year ago, while sheep and lamb production was down, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 404,300 head during September, compared to 390,500 head the year before. Average live weight was 264 pounds, up 2 pounds from September 2010.

Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 300 head during September, unchanged from a year earlier. Average live weight was 118 pounds, down 10 pounds from September 2010.
