Red meat production up in South Dakota


Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 98.7 million pounds during October. This was up 11 percent from one year ago and up 11 percent from last month. For October, both pork production and sheep and lamb production were up from one year ago, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 446,600 head during October, compared to 402,300 head the year before. Average live weight was 268 pounds, which was up 2 pounds from October 2010.

Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 200 head during October, unchanged from last year. Average live weight was 117 pounds, which was down 5 pounds from October 2010.
