Labor woes weigh on sugar gathering


Labor tensions were a strong undercurrent at Thursday morning’s American Crystal Sugar Annual meeting. The joint annual meeting of American Crystal Sugar and the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association brought a packed house to the Holiday Inn of Fargo, ND.

Labor tensions for the company have dominated headlines over the past four months, and a visiting guest from mexico told of a similar story that his industry faced recently. Juan Cortina, President and CEO of Grupo Azucarero Mexico (GAM) and President of the Mexican Chamber of Sugar and Alcohol Industries.

American Crystal’s annual meeting takes place each year on the first Thursday in the month of December. A group of union workers Thursday morning held a short news conference before the start of American Crystal’s meeting. The union workers have been locked out since August 1.
