Payroll tax cut bill passes before Christmas

The Senate and House of Representatives on Friday cleared a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut bill by unanimous consent, even though most members of Congress were already home for the holidays. President Obama signed it into law afterwards.

Obama also signed a separate appropriations bill funding the government through September 2012, wrapping up a legislative year. House members will return to Washington on January 17, while the Senate will return on January 23. Both bodies will face another extension.
