USDA announced additional disaster assistance for extreme weather losses

The Dakotas are getting small a chunk of additional disaster assistance being provided to 33 states and Puerto Rico from USDA  emergency funds.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says 2011 was unusual because almost every part of the country was hit by some type of disaster. In the Dakotas, flooding was the main problem.

In all, an additional 308 million dollars is being distributed for natural disasters. North Dakota’s share is $100,000, and South Dakota’s is $396,000. Vilsack says a strong safety net is important to sustain the success of American agriculture.

The money is aimed at helping the states recover from an unusually intense year of natural disasters, ranging from record floods to droughts and tropical storms.
