Argentina farmers call 1 week nationwide strike

Leading farm groups in Argentina have called a one-week nationwide strike to protest higher taxes and double-digit inflation. Four farm groups called the strike on Tuesday afternoon, throwing their their support behind farmers in Buenos Aires who started a nine-day strike Saturday to protest the steep rise in rural property taxes approved by the provincial legislature last week. The strike is also seen as a warning to other provinces mulling similar tax hikes.

The higher taxes are also coming after a difficult season for farmers in that region due to drought that reduced corn and soybean yields.
