The future of the North American Free Trade Agreement was the focus of a Farm Foundation Forum on Wednesday, at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
Offering a farm perspective at the Forum was Bob Stallman, a Texas producer and former president of the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Stallman says he thinks agriculture needs to have a stronger voice in pointing out the benefits of NAFTA, because renegotiation of the deal seems imminent.
If the White House takes the trade rhetoric too far, some fear we run the risk of dampening the existing pace of U.S. commodity exports to Canada, Mexico, and other countries. Stallman says hasn’t seen evidence of that yet.
Media reports from Capitol Hill indicate the Trump administration is considering an executive order to withdraw the U.S. from NAFTA.
