Cattle on Feed Up Two Percent; Cold Storage Report Also Released

On Friday afternoon, USDA released the April Cattle on Feed report and the Cold Storage report. USDA showed cattle on feed up two percent from last year at 12.1 million head. This is the highest April 1st inventory since the series began in 1996. Placements were down slightly while marketings of fed cattle were two percent below 2021.

The cold storage numbers showed total red meat supplies up one percent from last month and nine percent from last year. Total pounds of beef in freezers were up 1 percent from the previous month and up 11 percent from last year. Frozen pork supplies were up 2 percent from the previous month and up 8 percent from last year. Stocks of pork bellies were up 13 percent from last month and up 60 percent from last year.
