The Biden administration’s waiver to allow E15 sales this summer could open the door to a permanent fix. President Biden toured POET Bioprocessing in Menlo, Iowa, Tuesday, where he announced that his administration will lift restrictions on E15 for the 2022 summer driving season
Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor says they are exploring what steps to take next to make the fix permanent.
“In the most immediate past few weeks, the attention really across the board was focused on getting the emergency waiver for the summer, because that was the only path for us to be able to have access to E15 this summer. So, there was I think it kind of a conscious shift in the conversation on the industry perspective with our congressional champions. So, that being said, I think now that we’ve got the summer and we know that we’ve got a little bit of time to do some work with Congress, I think we’ve got to go back and revisit with our bipartisan champions and see what the path forward looks like.”
Skor says there a few different ways that could happen.
“The reason we’re having this conversation is because the oil industry successfully sued in court. Growth Energy exhausted our legal avenues, so that door is closed for us. So, moving forward, either you’ve got Congress, Congress would be passing a law that would make a permanent fix. EPA through rulemaking could make a federal fix. And then, you know, you have a conversation where a couple of state governors are talking to EPA about potentially opting out of the RVP program which would allow them to have fuel parody in the summer months between each E10 and E15.”
