June Cattle on Feed Down Slightly; Placements Higher Than Expected

(WASHINGTON D.C.)– The latest Cattle on Feed report came in mostly as expected, with one surprise in the placements category.

USDA on Friday said that cattle and calves on feed as of June 1st, 2024, totaled 11.6 million head. That number was slightly below the number on the same date last year. Placements in feedlots during May totaled 2.05 million head, 4% above 2023. That number was above the highest pre-report estimates as well.

Marketings came in at 1.96 million head, slightly above 2023 levels. Other disappearance totaled 62,000 head during May and that was 16% below 2023.
