(Pierre, SD) — A new report is showing an increase in state food assistance benefits for the second-straight year. According to state records, South Dakota has paid out just over 15-million-dollars in benefits through July from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP. That’s up from 13-point-eight-million-dollars as of July of last year and just under 12-million-dollars this time two years ago. According to date, more than 106-thousand-people in South Dakota — or one out of nine South Dakotans — is considered “food insecure.”
