SDSU Extension to Host Farm, Ranch Family Communication Workshop

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension will host a communication and conflict resolution workshop with farm and ranch family transition expert Elaine Froese.

“Breaking Barriers in Farm and Ranch Family Communication” is from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST on Nov. 19, 2024, at the Ramkota Hotel in Pierre.

To register, visit extension.sdstate.edu/events and search “families”. Tickets are $175, which covers lunch and all materials for up to four family members. Groups of more than four people are an additional $30 per person.

Froese, “Canada’s farm whisperer”, is a certified professional speaker, farmer, and award-winning author. This full-day workshop is designed to help farm and ranch families and agricultural professionals address the difficult conversations that can shape operations and their longevity. Through interactive exercises and practical advice, participants will learn how to effectively communicate about sensitive topics and constructively manage conflict.

“We’re excited to have Elaine discuss with our farm and ranch families across South Dakota the importance of communication, and how to overcome common challenges,” said Krista Ehlert, assistant professor and SDSU Extension Range Specialist. “We welcome families to come that are starting to have conversations about the future, or are in the midst of what that new future looks like. This workshop will provide you with the tools you need to move your operation forward.”

The morning session will provide participants with an understanding of why some topics are avoided and how to initiate tough conversations, while providing tools for clear, respectful communication and handling emotions during difficult conversations.

The afternoon session on conflict dynamics will help participants understand conflict triggers and patterns, identify their own conflict styles, and provide techniques to de-escalate conflicts. There will also be a question-and-answer session in the afternoon.
