Federal Regulations Proposed For CO2 Pipeline Safety

(Washington, DC) — A federal agency regulating CO2 pipelines is proposing new changes following a four-year investigation of a CO2 pipeline leak in Mississippi. These new mandates would also affect CO2 pipelines in South Dakota.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has filed new regulations in efforts to avoid a repeat of the 2020 Mississippi pipeline leak. There would be several additions, including strengthening construction requirements and pipe placement regulations, requiring the installment of leak alarm systems with ongoing testing, as well as training and equipping local first responders.

Summit Carbon Solutions has reapplied for a pipeline in South Dakota. The federal guidelines will likely take effect before South Dakota’s decision on Summit’s application, but the deadline to intervene and comment as a landowner is January 24th.
