CLIVE, IOWA – The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) announced the 2024 Master Pork Producers at the Iowa Pork Congress banquet on January 22 in Des Moines. This prestigious award recognizes individuals and families who excel in pork production, as demonstrated by outstanding production practices, commitment to We Care® principles, and meaningful contributions to their communities.
The We Care principles emphasize the responsibilities of pig farmers to uphold the highest standards in animal care, food safety, environmental stewardship, and ethical practices. The Master Pork Producers program, co-sponsored by IPPA and Iowa State University Extension, highlights the diverse expertise and dedication within Iowa’s pork industry.
Now in its 83rd year, this program welcomes a new class of honorees who join the ranks of Iowa’s most accomplished pork producers, representing eight decades of excellence and innovation in the field. Through this award, IPPA and Iowa State University celebrate the character, dedication, and impact of Iowa’s pork producers, showcasing the vital role they play in agriculture and their communities.
IPPA’s 83rd class of Master Pork Producers are:

· Doug Gruver, Sully
· Jeremy Ahlers, Remsen
· Josh & Megan Volante, Clutier
· Kevin & Devin Lux, Cherokee
· Matt & Michelle Thoma, Independence
· Mike & Megan Loecke, Manchester
· Pat & Krista Gent, Wellman
· Jake Knepper, Jesup (posthumously)
IPPA started the Master Pork Producer Award program in 1942 and has now named 1,533 Iowa pig farming businesses as Master Pork Producers.
“The Master Pork awards showcase the bet of pork production – celebrating those who are driven by passion and committed to feeding the world a safe, high-quality protein,” said IPPA Producer Outreach Director Brielle Smeby. “As the top pork producing state, Iowa’s success comes from our hardworking producers who face challenges head-on and continue to set the bar for excellence in the industry.”
The 2024 Honorary Master Pork Producers are:
· Mike Naig, elected as Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture in 2018, has always been deeply rooted in agriculture and is dedicated to advancing the state’s agricultural sector. He works hand-in-hand with the swine industry on key issues, such as foreign animal disease preparedness and response, and finding a fix for Proposition 12. Naig is committed to expanding economic opportunities for Iowans and advocates tirelessly for the hardworking men and women who keep the nation fed.
· Kent Mowrer, receives this award posthumously. Mowrer was deeply rooted in agriculture, a connection he maintained throughout his life. As the Senior Field Coordinator for the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, Kent was dedicated to helping Iowa’s livestock industry grow successfully and responsibly. He was known for giving advice based on experience, not just what was written in manuals or textbooks. His efforts often involved coaching young producers when building new hog facilities. This knack for teaching and his passion for the livestock industry made him a beloved figure among farmers.
Mike Ver Steeg of Inwood received the Iowa Environmental Steward Award. Ver Steeg’s commitment to sustainable pork production, innovative practices, and active community involvement make him a deserving candidate for the Iowa Pork Industry Environmental Steward Award. His dedication to environmental stewardship and the pork industry sets him apart as an exemplary producer.
Ken & Austin Lane of Spragueville received the Master Seedstock Producer Award, which is presented by the Iowa Purebred Swine Council. The Lane family’s operation has grown from a modest project to a thriving enterprise with 65 Berkshire sows and 12 boars. In 2018, they joined Berkwood Farms, a co-op that markets 100% Berkshire pigs to niche markets which provides a reliable market for their hogs on top of their show pig business. The Lanes are also supporters of Iowa Purebred Swine Council’s VIP program which encourages in-state purchases of show pigs for youth exhibitors.
In 2014, the Iowa Pork Producers Association introduced the Master Pork Partner Award to honor exceptional production partners who have significantly contributed to the success and advancement of Iowa’s pork industry, despite not being directly involved in daily operations at a specific production site.

- Bob Ries, Manchester, Driver of the Year
- Dan Weber, Waukon, Partner of the Year
- Dr. Bob Blomme, Audubon, Veterinarian of the Year
- Dr. Justin Kuecker, Algona, Veterinarian of the Year
Steven Doeden of Cleghorn earned the Pork All-American Award. Throughout his life, Steven has demonstrated a deep passion for farming and community involvement. His journey from a young boy captivated by pig farming to a recognized Master Pork Producer and community leader showcases his dedication and hard work. Whether it’s managing hog sites, running a successful manure hauling business, or volunteering in his community, Steven’s contributions are significant and far-reaching.
The award winners embody the diversity of Iowa’s pig farms and the dedicated individuals who support pork producers. Nominated by their peers and neighbors, these honorees reflect the strength and collaboration within the pork industry. Nominations for the 2025 Master Pork Program awards will open in May.
