Leveraging Data for 2025 Seed and Crop Management Decisions

There is always something to learn from a previous growing season. As the new year begins, it’s a great time for farmers to analyze results from their fields to make informed decisions for 2025.
Brian Shrader, a Pioneer agronomist in Indiana, recommends evaluating at least three years of data rather than only looking solely at the most recent season’s data and crop notes.
“I like to look at plot data from a 20-30 county-range in Eastern Indiana into Western Ohio because they have similar soil types and similar products in that geography. Then, I like to review at least three years of the product data if it is available.
“A three-year data set is my baseline for feeling like I can understand a product,” Shrader said. “By examining locations within a geography over several years, we’re trying to take variability out of the data set.”
For adequate data analysis, viewing historical yield maps is an important first step. Examining yield trends over time helps uncover patterns or variations in yield across different years and locations. By identifying areas within fields that consistently yield higher or lower than average, a farmer can pinpoint zones that need attention. Additionally, correlating yield data with influencing factors, such as soil type, weather conditions and management practices, provides valuable insights into areas needing improvement.
Hybrid and Variety Selection Based on Yield Data
Using yield data for hybrid and variety selection can significantly enhance performance. By comparing hybrid performance across multiple years, farmers can identify those consistent performers. Prioritizing hybrids with stability and consistency ensures less variability in performance across different environments and seasons. Lastly, hybrid maturity and disease resistance should align with field conditions and address potential environmental challenges.

The Pioneer® Yield Pyramid Decision Tool offers insights into how various management practices influence yield outcomes. Understanding these yield influencers allows farmers to compare results with average yields at each level, revealing opportunities for optimization. By making evidence-based decisions through this framework, farmers can refine hybrid selection and management strategies to achieve better results.
Pioneer provides a wealth of resources, such as the Corn Yield EstimatorPlanting Rate EstimatorGrowing Degree Unit (GDU) Calculator, and more to support yield improvement efforts. Additionally, consulting with Pioneer sales professionals offers personalized guidance on hybrid selection, management practices and yield improvement strategies.
By thoroughly analyzing yield data, understanding the factors that influence performance, and leveraging Pioneer’s advanced tools and resources, farmers can make data-driven decisions to enhance next year’s planting outcomes and achieve improved yields.
