Talking Pasture Health at CattleCon 2025

(SAN ANTONIO, TX) — With spring in our distant future, making sure we have healthy pasture for our cattle is essential.

Katie Koenig covers much of the central Plains for Corteva Agriscience and she encourages ranchers to be proactive with their pasture health. “Well, I know a lot of us are getting excited. We did get some really good later fall and some winter moisture, so as we kind of go in, I’m definitely recommending ranchers get out, be proactive, start scouting pastures,” says Koenig. “A lot of those winter annual weeds will be coming up first thing in the spring, and so just being more proactive in getting out and observing those areas and just scouting those fields so we can get ahead of those broadleaf weeds and give our grass the best opportunity to take off.”

When it comes to controlling broadleaf weeds in our pasture, Koenig points to a product in the Corteva lineup that could help even if you missed a key fall application window.

“And so a lot of our products, like Duracor, they can actually go down in the fall. So if you did not get Duracor down in the fall, then definitely recommend this spring getting it out.
It’s a post and pre-emergent product,” says Koenig. “It’s going to offer the best control post-emergent. So like I said, getting out, scouting, identifying those weeds, and then getting the Duracor applied. And then you’re going to see the grass take in what moisture we get in the spring, which we definitely want. What moisture we get in the spring is going to all go to the grass and the forage that’s going to be your food source for your cattle.

In other parts of the country, Koenig recommends a new product called NovaGraz™ that she says is the only product in our industry that is safe on white clover and will take care of your broadleaf weeds. For more, visit https://www.rangeandpasture.com.
