Start-up Drone Company Modovolo Unveils Configurable Drone

A reimagined drone with never-before-included features is about to hit the market. Enter The Modovolo Lift.

More than two and a half years ago, the founders of Modovolo were frustrated with the limitations of current drone technology. “We experienced and continued to hear from others that short flight times and static designs were limiting what could be accomplished with drones,” says Justin Call, Modovolo CEO. “We wanted to build a drone that would have longer flight times and higher payload capacity.”

Justin went on to explain current drone technology is static or fixed. To increase payload capacity, for example, you must buy another drone with the specific capacity. “If you’ve just spent $12,000 on a drone that only carries five pounds, and you have a need for a higher payload, you must purchase another drone to acquire the increased capability. And because there weren’t any other options, operators bought another drone.”

The Lift’s patent-pending design resembles a bicycle wheel with high-tension spokes that hold the components of the drone. “The Modovolo Lift is a modular platform that can be configured in unlimited ways,” Justin says. “You simply link more Lift Pods to lift higher payloads and maximize flight times.”

According to Erik, Modovolo’s CTO, flight times have always been an issue with drones. “You don’t get a lot of time in the air with current technology, and when the drone isn’t flying, people don’t make money.”

The Lift’s flight time is 2+ hours, about twice the time for current equipment. The longer flight times are achievable because of the modular design and the high-tension spokes, which are strong but don’t weigh much. The lighter the drone the longer the flight time.

Another feature of the Modovolo Lift is its price point: $6K, which is about half of other drones currently available. “The Quad-configured Modovolo Lift is priced at 50% less than a DJI Matrice 300 but has more payload capacity and at least twice the flight time,” Justin says.

The Modovolo Lift can be configured in multiple ways. Four configuration examples are featured at www.Modovolo.com, including platforms featuring single and multiple payloads, utility pods for cameras, sensors, batteries, seeds, pesticides, virtually anything. All configurations include longer flight times.

Modovolo is currently building production capacity for the Lift, and offering the first 200 pre-orders guaranteed production priority, exclusive access to see, provide feedback, and participate in the development and production process. Pre-orders include four lift pods and one utility pad for a fully refundable price of $50.

“Early adopters of technology are the ideal candidates for the Modovolo Lift,” Justin says. “We invite user feedback to help us improve on a drone design that offers users flexibility in building their platforms at a price point that won’t break the bank.”
