Upcoming Emerald Ash Borer Identification and Management Meeting This Week

PIERRE S.D. – South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) will lead a meeting to discuss identification and management of trees infested by emerald ash borer (EAB) on Thursday, April 11 at 7 pm at Canton Depot, 600 West 5th Street in Canton, South Dakota. Anyone interested in understanding the management of this beetle are welcome to attend.

Dr. John Ball, Forest Health Specialist and John Hartland, Staff Forester, will discuss how to decide if an ash tree is worth treating with insecticide or should be removed; cover the concerns and risks to removing standing dead ash that were killed by the beetle; and discuss appropriate trees to plant as replacements.

Emerald ash borer, the exotic borer responsible for the loss of hundreds of millions of ash trees across North America, is established in Lincoln, Minnehaha, and Union counties in South Dakota and was first confirmed in Canton in 2020.
